A Women Cotton Pickers Trainer’s Training Programme in Clean Cotton was conducted at the Regional Agriculture Economic Development Centre (RAEDC), Vehari in collaboration with Agriculture Department, Government of Punjab from 23-09-2013 to 04-10-2013
The Joint Director, PCSI inaugurated the programme on 23-09-13 at RAEDC, Vehari. The Joint Director in its speech informed the participants of the objectives and importance of the Course. He stated that Pak cotton in spite of its good quality was not getting its true value in the local and international markets due to improper picking, handling, transportation, storage, and ginning practices, and non-implementation of cotton classing and grading system The Chief coordinator RAEDC briefed the participant on the working of RAEDC.
The Agriculture Department, Government of Punjab nominated 19 female agriculture officers to take part in the training program at RAEDC out of which 13 female agriculture officers reported.
The technical team comprising 4 Cotton Field Officers/ Classers/ Arbitrators of PCSI as resource persons provided the comprehensive training to the trainers in the proper cotton picking procedures, handling, storage, and transportation to reduce contamination. The trainers were also familiarized with the concept of cotton classing and grading both in theory and practice.
The cotton pickers trainers were taken to farms/fields where they were given practical training on proper picking procedures, handling and storage. The training also focused on the importance of official seed cotton grade boxes, lint cotton standards boxes, cotton standardization system, and production of high quality clean cotton at par with international standards. The practicals and demonstrations were supported with lectures by experts in various fields relating to cotton and cotton trade.
The certificate distribution ceremony at the completion of two weeks training program at RAEDC, Vehari was graced by the presence of Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Punjab, Mrs. Faraha Manzoor Khan as chief guest. She highlighted the importance of cotton in the economy of the country with special emphasis on picking of cotton as the most important step in the clean cotton value chain. She awarded certificates to the successful participants.
