ICAC Meeting

 The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) has its Secretariat in Washington D.C, USA. It was founded in 1939. It is an association of Governments of cotton producing, consuming and trading countries. Its main function is to assist Governments in fostering a healthy world cotton economy. The role of the ICAC is to raise awareness, provide information and serve as a catalyst for cooperative action on cotton related issues of international significance. Pakistan is an important member of the ICAC since 1948 and paying its membership fee annually. ICAC has held total 74 sessions of the organization so far. Its last 10 sessions i.e. 65th to 74th sessions were held from 2006 to 2015 in the countries namely Brazil, Turkey, Burkina Faso, South Africa, USA, Argentina, Switzerland, Columbia, Greece and India respectively.

 

2.                     Pakistan is the 4th largest producer and 3rd largest consumer of cotton in the world. Keeping in view the importance of Pakistan, ICAC has accepted the offer of Government of Pakistan to host the 75th ICAC Plenary Session 2016 in Pakistan. Accordingly the 75th Plenary Session of ICAC will be held in the last quarter of 2016 in Pakistan. The Ministry of Textile Industry has already constituted an Organizing Committee for organizing the weeklong conference in Islamabad. About 400 delegates from 45 countries are expected to attend the meeting. All the sessions and meetings of the conference will be held in Islamabad.

 

3.                     A brainstorming meeting of the representatives of Private Sector (producers, traders and industry), academia and researchers as well as public sector officers were held on 25-02-2016 in the Ministry of Textile Industry to prepare theme and agenda items for the conference. This meeting was chaired jointly by Mr. Amir Muhammad Khan Marwat, Secretary, Ministry of Textile Industry and Mr. Jose Sette, Executive Director, ICAC Secretariat, Wasington D.C, USA. The officers from the Ministry of Textile Industry, Finance, Foreign Affaris, Information & Broadcasting, Agriculture Departments of Punjab and Sindh and office bearers and representatives from Pakistan Cotton Ginning Association, All Pakistan Textile Mills Association, Karachi Cotton Association, Agriculture University Faisalabad, National Textile University Faisalabad, Bahauddin Zakria University Multan, Crop Life Pakistan and prominent cotton growers attended the meeting. The participants in this meeting presented some topics for selection of theme and also proposed a number of agenda items/topics for various open and breakout sessions of the conference.  In addition, some participants also gave names of speakers for the agenda items proposed by them. All the topics were discussed in depth and detail and the meeting finalized the theme and agenda items for submission to the ICAC Secretariat for approval of Standing Committee of ICAC.
